Internationally renowned photographer Chris Chapman, locally best known for his images depicting various aspects of Dartmoor life since 1972, is publishing his much-anticipated new book Hallowed Earth in November.

The official launch is scheduled for Saturday, November 15th, from 10am to 4pm, at the Providence

Methodist Chapel in Throwleigh, on the northern edge of Dartmoor.

Hallowed Earth is the long-awaited follow-up to Chris’s earlier and very popular book, Wild Goose and Riddon, published in 2000, that showed a selection of images of Dartmoor life from his first 25 years of living on Dartmoor.

The launch at Providence Chapel will be accompanied by a display of selected photographs from the new book as well as other photographs from the established semi-permanent exhibition of Chris’s work which is regularly shown during the summer months at the chapel. Additionally there will be a continuous showing throughout the day of various films made by Chris from his years as a photographer, linked to the new book.

Providence Chapel is a natural setting for the book launch, as in 2022, with the award of a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the chapel purchased a collection of Chris’s photographs taken over the last

fifty years of life on Dartmoor. Such has been the success of the exhibition as key to reviving the fortunes of the Providence Chapel, that in 2023 not only did the chapel win the Church Tourism Award for England, but it was also announced as the overall winner for Great Britain and Northern Ireland of the ‘Open for Visitors Award’.

Chris will be present on the day and available to sign any new copies purchased of his book if desired, and local homemade refreshments will be available to visitors throughout the day.

The launch exhibition will be free entry, and free parking will be available adjacent to the chapel. The location of the chapel using the what3words mapping app is ///lived.pruned.optimists
