Tavistock Parish Church is preparing to welcome visitors to one of the town’s most beloved seasonal events - the Tavistock Christmas Tree Festival, which opens later this month. Now in its 16th year, the festival promises another spectacular display of creativity, community spirit and festive cheer.
More than 65 beautifully decorated trees will fill St Eustachius’ Church, each one uniquely adorned by local voluntary groups, schools, charities, and businesses. From shimmering lights to handmade decorations, the festival has become a joyful showcase of local talent and imagination.
Last year’s winners set a high bar, with Tavistock Musical Theatre Company wowing visitors with a stunning dragon-themed tree, while Tavistock College charmed with a whimsical woodland poem brought to life through intricate decorations. Organisers are keeping details under wraps this year but expectations are high for another round of creative surprises.
Among the new contributors for 2025 are The National Trust at Buckland Abbey, Kings Bakery and Deli, and Home-Start South and West Devon, joining a long list of returning favourites. Local schools are once again taking part, with classrooms reportedly buzzing with excitement as pupils prepare handmade decorations, and with likely more than a little glitter.
Visitors are invited to vote for their favourite tree while enjoying coffee and festive treats such as Christmas cookies. There will also be a chance to shop for gifts, including locally made preserves, jams, chutneys and handcrafted items from Vintage Green.
The Mayor of Tavistock, Councillor Steve Hipsey, will officially open this year’s festival on Friday 28 November at 2:30pm. Entry costs £1 for adults, while children can attend for free. The festival runs until Sunday 7 December, with doors open 10:00am to 4:00pm daily, apart from special timings on selected days, including a late-night opening for Tavistock’s Dickensian Evening on Friday 5 December (10:00am–9:00pm).
The Tavistock Christmas Tree Festival first began in 2009 and has since become a cherished fixture in the town’s festive calendar. Organised by the Friends of St Eustachius’, a volunteer-led group with more than 200 members, the event raises thousands of pounds each year to support the upkeep and enhancement of the historic parish church.
After a brief hiatus during the pandemic, the festival has returned stronger than ever, a testament to the dedication of the community and the enduring magic of Christmas in Tavistock.
For full details and opening times, visit St Eustachius’ Church, Tavistock, from 28 November to 7 December and experience one of Devon’s most heartwarming holiday traditions.
