A lively April Fools’ Day fundraiser in Totnes has raised £1,600 to support the 2026 Totnes Fringe Festival.
Around 130 people gathered at the Royal Seven Stars Hotel on 1 April for a high-energy drag bingo night, helping to fund this year’s festival, which is set to take place from 9 to 12 July.
The event was hosted by South West drag performer Roberta Calamari, who brought comedy, live vocals and audience interaction to the evening. Music was provided by DJ Zaid Al-Rikabi, with guests embracing the occasion in colourful and glitter-filled outfits.
Organisers said the event transformed a traditional bingo night into an immersive and playful experience, with a dancefloor atmosphere throughout the evening.
A range of prizes were donated by local businesses, including experiences and vouchers from Totnes Wine, Orchard Carving Studio, Wilderhus Glamping, Somewhere Sauna in Mothecombe, The Barn Cinema and China Blue.
Funds raised will go directly towards supporting artists and delivering the multi-venue festival programme, including paying fair fees, keeping ticket prices accessible and covering production and marketing costs. The festival also aims to create opportunities for young people and emerging creatives.
Danielle McIlven, Director of Totnes Fringe Festival, commented:
“The night captured exactly what Totnes Fringe is about: creativity, connection and a sense of shared joy. Seeing so many people come together to support the Festival in such a fun and generous way was incredibly special, and we are very grateful to the local businesses who donated prizes and everyone who came along and made it such a success. It gives us real momentum as we build towards July.”
The Totnes Fringe Festival is entirely volunteer-run and independently funded, relying on community donations, fundraising events, small grants and support from local businesses rather than core public funding.
“Sponsorship plays a vital role in making the Festival happen,” continued Danielle. “Every contribution directly supports artists, enables ambitious programming, and helps keep the Festival accessible, inclusive and rooted in the community.
“For local businesses, sponsoring Totnes Fringe offers a genuine connection to a growing and highly engaged audience. With over 3,000 attendees and 11 sold-out shows last year, we know that the Festival brings increased footfall into the town and creates opportunities for businesses to be visible as part of something positive and widely supported.”
Organisers say they are keen to hear from businesses interested in supporting the festival, highlighting the opportunity to connect with audiences through print, press and digital promotion while contributing to the town’s cultural life.
