Despite navigating the choppy waters of lockdowns and downturns, Ashburton’s beloved comic bookshop, ‘Gnash Comics’, has triumphantly held its own. Not merely a retailer, Gnash has become a vibrant part of the community, introducing interactive workshops for all ages and serving as a hub for creators, artists and gaming enthusiasts.
Over the years, Gnash has proudly stood amongst the myriad of independent businesses that enrich Ashburton, contributing significantly to the town’s growing appeal as a destination of choice. However, after a fulfilling and rewarding journey, the time has come to step back and, with a sense of both melancholy and accomplishment, prepare to say farewell this coming summer.
The dedicated Gnash team has cherished every moment of their 11-year adventure, devoting their time and energy to nurturing creativity, championing the art of comics, and promoting the charms of Ashburton. “When we first opened, people were surprised to find a comic book shop nestled on the outskirts of Dartmoor National Park,” said a spokesperson for Gnash. “Yet, we quickly broadened our horizons, building connections with Europe, the United States, Asia and garnering friends and supporters globally.”
One of Gnash’s most noteworthy achievements has been introducing their international audience to South Devon’s exceptional community of comic creators, encompassing both esteemed international award-winning veterans and fresh, emerging talent. “It has been an absolute privilege and honour to play our part in this thriving creative hub,” they added.
While the eventual closing of Gnash’s doors is imminent, the shop isn’t bowing out quietly. The coming summer months will see a series of special events to celebrate the shop’s remarkable run. Moreover, the team remains optimistic about finding the perfect successor to carry on the Gnash legacy.
Stay tuned for more information on upcoming events and the search for the next steward of Gnash Comics.
