John Germon Snr has become the first person in Ashburton’s history to receive the town’s highest honour, the Freedom of the Town.
The 73-year-old, who was born in Roborough Lane and has lived in Ashburton all his life, was recognised by Ashburton Town Council at a special meeting on Tuesday 8 July.

He was awarded the title for his outstanding service and dedication to the community, including his work as town clerk and his long-standing involvement with local organisations and groups.
The Freedom of the Town award is the highest honour a town or city can bestow upon an individual or organisation.

While historically the title of “freeman” carried certain privileges, today it is largely symbolic, a ceremonial mark of appreciation and civic pride.
The award is typically granted by the council following a nomination process, recognising exceptional service and a deep commitment to the local community.
Mr Germon's contributions include long-term involvement with Ashburton’s Court Leet and Baron Juries, the Ashburton Carnival, Ashburton Swimming Pool, the Ashburton/Cleder Twinning Association, the Royal British Legion, the Hut at Blogishay Lane, Ashburton Community Fridge, the In-Con Singers, the Devon Dialect Club and countless photographs taken to record Ashburton’s history.
The official scroll presented to Mr Germon praised him for giving his “time and energy to make Ashburton a better place to live”.
Speaking after the ceremony, Mr Germon said: “I was very humbled by this great honour bestowed upon me by the Town Council. I did not have a clue this was going to happen and it was a very emotional evening and something that I am very proud of receiving.”
Mayor Ann Bovey, who is also Chair of Ashburton Council, said: “John may not be able to drive his sheep through town anymore, but this is a truly prestigious honour which will not be awarded very often. Honorary Freedom of Ashburton could not have been awarded to a better recipient.”
She added: “It’s my honour and pleasure on behalf of the Town Council to award you, Mr John Germon Snr, the highest honour it can bestow in recognition of your devoted service to Ashburton. Over many years you have shown huge commitment to the community, both as Town Clerk and in your contributions to many local organisations and groups. You have selflessly given your time and energy to the town and made Ashburton a better place to live. We applaud your valuable and sterling service whilst thanking you most sincerely.”
