Dr Kevin Bishop, Chief Executive of Dartmoor National Park Authority, has announced he will step down at the start of 2026, bringing to a close nearly two decades of dedicated leadership.

Since taking on the role in October 2007, Dr Bishop has described his work as his “dream job,” reflecting a deep passion for preserving and enhancing one of the UK’s most cherished landscapes.

“I feel very honoured and privileged to have worked for Dartmoor National Park,” he said.

“It is a special place and I’ve been lucky to have worked with special people – from our passionate staff, volunteers and Members, to the organisations and people who live, work and care for this world-class landscape.”

Under his visionary leadership, Dartmoor became the first national park in the UK to declare an ecological and climate emergency, swiftly introducing a Climate Action Plan within six months.

Dr Bishop championed innovative programmes focused on restoring nature, improving land management, and increasing public access for all.

One of his proudest achievements is the award-winning Dartmoor Futures project, developed in partnership with the local farming community, demonstrating how traditional farming skills can play a vital role in nature restoration.

Chair of Dartmoor National Park Authority, Will Dracup, praised Dr Bishop’s commitment and impact.

“We are immensely grateful to Kevin for the vision, energy, commitment and dedication he’s given to Dartmoor throughout his leadership.

He added: “His unswerving commitment to the purposes and duty of our wonderful National Park – and protected landscapes across the UK - will be felt for many years to come."

Dr Bishop will remain in post while the authority begins recruitment for his successor later this year, ensuring a smooth transition.
