Community groups across Dartmoor can now apply for new grants designed to help people stay well, stay connected and remain supported this winter.

Devon County Council (DCC) has set aside £85,000 for the 'Growing Communities Fund', offering grants of up to £1,000 for not-for-profit groups, charities and social enterprises.

The money is aimed at local projects that improve people’s wellbeing, reduce isolation, provide nutritious food or create warm, safe spaces during colder months.

Since its launch in 2022, the fund has awarded over 650 grants worth more than £1.2 million, supporting hundreds of projects across the county.

Many of these have helped families manage rising food costs and energy bills, challenges which continue to affect rural communities including those on Dartmoor.

Councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, DCC Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, Community and Public Health, said: “For four years now, we have seen how the Growing Communities Fund can provide vital support to local communities that make a genuine difference. Initially set up in the wake of Covid to give communities a helping hand, we are continuing to help groups that help ensure communities are well nourished and kept warm.”

This year, the 'Growing Communities Fund' is being launched alongside a new £150,000 youth fund called 'Places To Go, Things To Do'.

The scheme will help kick-start activities and projects that enrich the lives of young people in Devon, including rural areas where opportunities may be limited.

Groups encouraged to apply include those running community meals, hosting warm spaces, redistributing surplus food, or teaching people how to cook on a budget.

Applications can be made online through Devon County Council’s website.
