Communities across Dartmoor are coming together today, World Suicide Prevention Day, to share a message of hope and support.

From village halls to local schools, the focus is on reminding people that they are never alone and that help is always available.

Devon Mind works with community groups to host courses, workshops and wellbeing activities encouraging open conversations about mental health.

While nature-based initiatives like Moor Trees highlight how time outdoors can support wellbeing.

A Tavistock resident explained how charities like Papyrus have helped them:
“Papyrus put me into a position where I am able to seek the help that I need, helping me get to a more sound state of mind and ease my anxiety. I hope to give back by fundraising and bringing awareness to their efforts so other people are able to get the help they deserve.”

Alongside Dartmoor’s efforts, a major awareness event is taking place today (10 September) in Plymouth on at Plymouth Methodist Central Hall.

The programme features talks on chronic pain and mental health, the importance of language, and practical guidance on safety plans and early intervention.

There are contributions from the Samaritans, Chronic Pain Coaching CIC, Jeremiah’s Journey, and Baton of Hope.

Local services are also stepping up. Devon Partnership NHS Trust has been reminding residents on social media that help is available 24/7.

Their First Response Service offers urgent support to anyone experiencing a mental health crisis - accessible by calling 111.

For many, the message is simple: connection saves lives.

By talking, listening, and supporting one another, communities across Dartmoor and beyond are showing that prevention is possible, and that nobody has to face their struggles alone.
