Nearly 200 runners took part in the Dartmoor Volcano Race on Saturday 13 September, with organisers calling it one of the toughest yet due to the boggy ground.

Now in its ninth year, the race started from Scoriton and followed a challenging course across open moorland.

Volunteers from Chagford-based OuterEdge Events supported the race, staffing registration, checkpoints and remote areas of the moor.

“A massive shout-out”  was given to the crew to praise their efforts in ensuring safety and smooth running of the event.

While the skies were clear, and conditions warm on the day, heavy rain in the weeks before left large sections waterlogged.

OuterEdge told social media: “It was possibly the best ever conditions for views, but the mud made it a real test. You either loved sinking knee-deep in the mires, or you hated it. Either way, it was hard work.”

Despite the difficult terrain, some fast times were recorded.

The men’s race was won by Will Wooler in 1:23:20, followed closely by Eddie Jones in 1:24:40. Third place went to Scott Bonner with a time of 1:33:54.

In the women’s race, Lucy Rochford finished first in 1:33:56, just seconds behind the men’s podium. She was followed by Maddie Horton in 1:38:10 and Lucy Williams in 1:50:58.

For the first time, every runner who started the race crossed the finish line.

Mark Brooks, Race Director at OuterEdge told us: “Everyone loves this race. It has a great vibe, and such a friendly atmosphere. There are always fast runners going for the podium places but most are out there for fun, and to have a great day out over the Moor! It’s a very sociable place to be!”

Next year will mark the 10th edition of the Dartmoor Volcano Race, set for Saturday 12 September 2026, with a special medal planned to celebrate the milestone.
