Tavistock was placed sixth. Known as the “Western Gateway to Dartmoor,” the stannary town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Georgian and Victorian architecture alongside a busy high street and well-known Pannier Market.

The report noted the balance between historic character and modern facilities, with schools, sports centres and health services available locally.

Annual events such as the Goose Fair and Dickensian Evening were also highlighted as examples of the town’s strong community life.

Seventh place went to Ashburton, praised for its creative spirit and thriving independent scene.

The town’s high street features antique shops, galleries, cafés and a variety of local businesses.

Its arts centre and annual festivals reflect an active community, while historic traditions such as the Bread Weighing and Ale Tasting remain part of the calendar.

The town’s location was also seen as a strength, offering countryside access on the edge of Dartmoor while being only a short drive to Exeter or Plymouth via the Devon Expressway.

Moretonhampstead ranked eighth and was noted for combining rural peace with a lively community.

The market town has a range of independent shops, pubs and services, many of which are supported by local volunteers.

Facilities such as the outdoor pool, library and arts centre are community-run, and events including a food festival, music days and monthly makers’ markets bring residents together.

Its location makes it popular with walkers and cyclists using the trails around Dartmoor.
