The M5 remains shut this morning (September 19) in both directions between junction 27 at Tiverton and junction 28 at Cullompton following serious collisions overnight.
The motorway was first closed late on Wednesday, September 18, after a serious incident.
National Highways South West said police remain at the scene to carry out collision investigation work.
Emergency services are at the scene and diversions are in place.
We will bring you the latest updates as we get them.
13.12pm: National Highways reports that the M5 is now OPEN southbound between Junction 27 at Sampford Peverell to Junction 28 at Cullompton following two seperate collisions. Delays still remain, as it is reported there is a 45-minute delay southbound for traffic.
11.50am - National Highways have reported that southbound delays are currently around 45 minutes on approach to the M5 closure near Junction 28. Motorists are urged to allow extra time or avoid the area if possible.
10:40am - Devon and Cornwall Police announced on social media that they are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following a three-vehicle collision on the M5 southbound near Junction 28 (Willand/Cullompton).
The collision happened at around 9.50pm on Thursday 18 September.
Vehicles involved: Vauxhall Zafira, Ford Ka, Porsche Boxster.
The male driver of the Ford Ka was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to contact police via their website or by calling 101, quoting log number 806 of 18 September.
8.50am - Police say that road closures remain in place this morning following two serious multi-vehicle collisions on the M5 southbound.
The collisions between junctions 27 and 28 were reported to us at around 9.50pm and 11.10pm last night, Thursday 18 September.
A number of people have been seriously injured and the closures are likely to remain in place for at least another two hours.
Devon and Cornwall Police said: “We thank drivers for their patience while recovery and investigation work is carried out.”
8am - National Highways South West has confirmed the M5 remains closed in both directions between J27 and J28. Police remain on scene to carry out collision investigation work. Diversions are in place.
Diversion routes
Southbound: Follow the solid square diversion symbol. Leave the M5 at J27 and take the first exit onto the A38. Continue to the roundabout with the B3181 at Waterloo Cross and take the second exit onto the B3181 southbound. Follow the B3181 through Willand and rejoin the M5 at J28 (Cullompton).
Northbound: Follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol. Exit the M5 at J28 (Cullompton) and join the B3181 northbound towards Willand. Continue through Willand and towards Sampford Peverell. At the junction with the A361, follow signs for Tiverton/Barnstaple and use the A361 link road to rejoin the M5 at J27.
Earlier - The motorway was closed on the night of Wednesday, September 18, after a serious collision. Emergency services remain at the scene.
