Support for post offices Cllr Cottle-Hunkin and Cllr Rogers Credit- Devon County Council.
The UK Government has launched a nationwide consultation on the future of the Post Office which will be the first major review of the network in more than 15 years.
Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, Councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, says it is a vital chance for people across the county to make their voices heard.
She is encouraging residents, businesses, community groups and postmasters to share their views before the consultation closes on 6 October 2025.

The Government’s Green Paper sets out a number of proposals, including:
“Post Offices are a key part of the fabric of Devon’s communities,” said Cllr Cottle-Hunkin.
“I am disappointed that so many rural communities have lost access to a local Post Office, and clearly the services in many Devon towns are under threat.”
She added that the Council will make a formal response to highlight the importance of the service for rural communities.
Councillor Cottle-Hunkin also praised local work already taking place, including a mobile outreach Post Office in Ashburton, run by Councillor Stuart Rogers, which also offers book loans in partnership with Libraries Unlimited.
“That service is providing an important social connection and support for people far beyond the Post Office service itself,” she said.
“I encourage all Devon residents to share their views, and to help shape the future of the Post Office service in Devon.”
Councillor Rogers told us: “I am proud to be Ashburton Postmaster and humbled to be a Devon County Councillor. I am grateful to Councillor Cottle-Hunkin and hard working DCC officers. Collectively, we encourage everyone to contribute to the PO Green Papers.”
