A Plymouth animal rescue centre has hit its fundraising target to help a tiny puppy in need of urgent surgery.

Just days after launching their appeal, Gables Dogs and Cats Home already raised over £3,500 from more than 180 generous donors to fund vital treatment for Harriet, a seven-week-old Miniature Dachshund.

Harriet was taken in by Gables with a serious bilateral inguinal hernia, affecting both sides of her abdomen.

The condition, which is genetic, had worsened as she had grown and could have become life-threatening if left untreated.

According to General Manager Claire Sparkes, Gables was overwhelmed by the response to the appeal.

She said: “We could not believe the kindness the public showed, and were able to book Harriet in for the surgery which is happening as we speak (Tuesday 23 September). After her surgery, she will be taken home and cared for 24/7 by a member of staff who can monitor her road to recovery.”

The original appeal aimed to raise £3,000 to cover surgery, treatment, medication, neutering, flea and worm treatment, and vaccinations.

The extra money raised will go into Gables’ general funds to help other animals in their care.

Gables, which does not receive government funding, has been rescuing and rehoming unwanted and abandoned dogs and cats since 1907.

Each year the charity cares for nearly 1,000 animals across Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and the Isles of Scilly.

Donations can still be made to support Harriet and the wider work of the charity:
