Speculation that a new Harry Potter television series could be filmed in Dartmoor has sparked interest and debate among local residents.

Recent photos from the area, particularly around the village of Lustleigh, have added fuel to online discussions.

The production, reportedly operating under the codename “Brown Cat,” has been rumoured to be using locations in Devon, prompting conversations about the potential benefits and challenges such a high-profile shoot might bring to small rural communities.

Lustleigh Parish Clerk shared on Facebook that discussions have taken place regarding repairs to Wreyland Path, noting:  “The filming company have been given permission by the DCC Highways to proceed with repairs on Wreyland path, using an approved contractor.”

Some locals welcomed the possibility of infrastructure improvements, while others questioned why such work had not been carried out previously.

One disgruntled resident commented: “That’s brilliant news, can fix potholes for filming but not for everyday use.”

The series, set to premiere in 2027, will adapt all seven of J.K. Rowling’s original books over seven seasons. Key cast members include Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Veteran actors John Lithgow and Nick Frost have also joined the production as Professor Dumbledore and Hagrid, respectively.

Social media reaction from residents has been mixed. Some see potential economic benefits: “Filming takes place all the time in the South West and all the locations don’t get ‘swamped’. If productions started using more local resources and crew, it could greatly benefit the local economy…any increase in footfall would be good for local businesses.”

Others expressed concern about the impact on Dartmoor’s small villages: “I do like Harry Potter, but I love the village and surrounding area more, this tiny place, narrow roads and infrastructure may not cope with visitors that could swarm and ruin it. It should all be filmed in studios.”

While speculation continues, many are excited about the possibility of Devon landscapes appearing on screens, which could benefit local shops, cafés, and B&Bs.

At the same time, the debate highlights the tension between economic opportunity and preserving the character of rural villages.

As rumours circulate, Lustleigh and surrounding areas remain a focus for online discussion.
