The Treby Arms in Sparkwell is set to reopen next month under new ownership, just over a week after the previous team announced the pub’s closure.
On Monday 13 October, the former owners, Dave and his team, posted on Facebook that the pub was closing “with deep sadness,” citing “the continued rise in operational and supply costs” as the main reason.

The statement thanked customers, calling The Treby Arms “a gathering place, a home away from home, and a part of the local fabric.”
However, today (21 October), the pub’s Facebook page shared new and unexpected news.
“We would like to announce The Treby Arms will be re-opening its doors on the 27th of November, in time for the Christmas period. We will be doing some refurbishment over the coming weeks so feel free to pop in and say hi to the new owners.”
The post added that Christmas menus would be released soon and that updates would follow as the refurbishment progresses.
Local residents were quick to react, many expressing both surprise and support on social media.
One user wrote that the pub “definitely needed a good clean and refurbish” but added that there was “no reason why this pub can’t flourish like it did many years ago.”
They also said that they hoped the open fire would remain, describing the venue as a place “for locals to feel welcome and wanted once again.”
In reply, the new owners confirmed that the fire would stay and that they plan to serve “a very good selection of beers, ales and an excellent food offering, while keeping it affordable and local.”
Another user asked about the quick turnaround from closed to re-opening: “Didn't you announce last week that you were closing? Very confusing.”
The pub replied: “New owners, fresh start, new chefs, refurbished pub. Lots to share with you over the next few weeks.”
They added that the aim is to “stop the open-close trend” and keep the pub “open seven days a week, 365 days a year.”
The Treby Arms, located on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, will reopen on Wednesday 27 November following refurbishment.
