Police are investigating a fire in Tavistock on Monday morning (November 3) after bins and nearby garages were damaged in a blaze believed to be deliberate.

Fire crews from Tavistock Fire Station were called to Church Lane at around 3.25am following several 999 calls reporting bins on fire near a building.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said one fire engine was initially sent to the scene, with a second crew called shortly after as the flames spread to nearby garages.

On arrival, crews found commercial bins alight, with the fire beginning to catch onto a row of garages.

Firefighters used two breathing apparatus sets, one hose reel jet, and one main jet to bring the blaze under control.

The bins were destroyed and there was external damage to the garages, but no injuries have been reported.

The fire service confirmed the cause is believed to have been deliberate and said the incident had been handed over to police for investigation.

A spokesperson for Devon & Cornwall Police said:

“We are investigating a bin fire which occurred on Church Lane, Tavistock, at around 3am today (3 November). It was reported that commercial waste bins were on fire. Two nearby garages suffered some superficial damage. The fire service attended and safely extinguished the fire. The cause is currently being treated as suspicious, and enquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information which may assist officers is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference 50250282847.”
