After more than 20 years of service, Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team, Tavistock has retired its well-used Land Rover Defender, known by its callsign DART 63.

The volunteer team, which responds to emergencies across Dartmoor and beyond, has chosen a Toyota Hilux to replace the old vehicle after testing several options.

Safety, reliability, and performance on rough terrain were said to be key factors in the decision.

Chosen for its capability, the Hilux will carry team members along with vital medical, rescue, and communications equipment.

It is also hoped to form the backbone of the team’s four-wheel-drive operations for many years to come.

A spokesperson for the team said:

“After testing a number of vehicles, the Toyota Hilux has been chosen as the platform for our new DART 63. It’s already proving reliable during training and will help us continue to respond safely and efficiently to incidents on Dartmoor.”

Since its arrival, the Hilux has already been used during training sessions while plans are under way to convert it into a purpose-built rescue vehicle.

Conversion work will include a new aluminium canopy, upgraded suspension and tyres, and improved communications equipment.

This marks the next stage in updating the rescue fleet, which supports callouts across Dartmoor, including remote and difficult-to-access areas around Tavistock.

Dartmoor Search and Rescue’s Tavistock branch were recently featured in a detailed profile by The Moorlander, highlighting their life-saving work and commitment on Dartmoor

On the team’s Facebook page, local residents shared their support for the upgrade.

Stuart Smith wrote: “Hope it all works out and it becomes the ideal vehicle to replace DART63.”

Simon Burton added: “I had a Hilux when I lived in Africa. It never let me down wherever I went.”
