Tavistock will step back in time this Friday (5 December) as its well-loved Dickensian Evening returns, bringing street entertainment, market stalls and late-night shopping to the town centre.

From 5pm, the streets will fill with stilt walkers, choirs, bands and performers.

Families can enjoy a traditional merry-go-round, and the smell of roasting chestnuts from the steam engines will give the evening its classic Victorian Christmas feel.

Shops across town will stay open late, and visitors can browse festive food, drink, craft and gift stalls around the town and inside Butcher’s Hall.

Many people also stop at St Eustachius Church, which creates an atmospheric setting for the night.

The event begins with the Lantern Parade at 5pm, followed by the town’s Christmas lights switch-on at 5.45pm in Bedford Square.

This year’s programme includes:

  • Street acts from Elfic and Rosie Rainbow’s Dickensian Circus
  • Performances from local choirs and musicians
  • A mix of seasonal stalls and activities across the town
  • Hosting by Magic Martin

The evening is expected to draw large crowds, as it remains one of Tavistock’s most popular annual events.

Organisers are encouraging people to plan ahead with several measures in place such as:

  • Free parking in the town centre from 3pm
  • Free Park & Ride from Morrisons starting at 4.15pm (overflow available)
  • Disabled parking at ATS on Parkwood Road from 5pm with a valid blue badge

The Dickensian Evening has become a favourite winter tradition for residents and visitors, marking the start of the town’s festive season with music, lights, local traders and family-friendly entertainment.

Several local traders have told of their excitement for this year’s winter event, with many calling the night ‘the best of the year’ when it comes to takings.

“When last year’s event was cancelled, we saw a noticeable decrease in not only our December takings but our overall yearly revenue too.” Kenny Lake, manager at Oggy Oggy told The Moorlander.

“It is our best night of the year for sales no question and I’m sure other local traders will tell a similar story, and we are all hoping to have another successful evening this year.”
