Flooding: A96 Exeter Inn - Road impassable A386 Parkwood Road, Tavistock - Half carriageway A381 Totnes- Road impassable

Trees: B3230 Muddiford - road blocked A39 Watersmeet Road, Lynton - Cleared

Motorists across Devon and the Dartmoor region are facing treacherous conditions this morning as Storm Bram brings torrential rain, strong winds, and widespread flooding to the South West. 

Persistent overnight downpours have left several key routes affected, and authorities are urging extreme caution.

The Environment Agency has also placed 18 flood warnings across Devon, advising residents in at-risk areas to “act now” as flash flooding may pose a danger to life. 

Households in affected zones are encouraged to move valuables and pets to safer locations and ensure utilities are switched off if necessary.

Major routes impacted by flooding

According to the latest updates from Devon Alert, flooding has been reported at the following locations:

  • A383 near the Dartmoor Halfway Inn (Ashburton Road) - Floodwater affecting both directions, with slow-moving traffic between the Halfway Inn and Wrigwell turn-off.
  • A384 at Buckfastleigh - Significant surface water causing delays for those travelling between the A38 and Totnes.
  • East Street, Ashburton - Localised flooding disrupting movement through the town centre.
  • B3193 Teign Valley Road - Flooding affecting stretches of the route, particularly in low-lying areas.

Fallen Trees and additional hazards

Strong winds have led to reports of trees down on several rural and coastal routes, including:

  • B3205 toward Lower Ferry from Hillhead
  • A39 Watersmeet Road, Lynton

Drivers who must make essential journeys are advised to reduce speed and increase stopping distances.

Devon and Cornwall Police statement:

“We're already receiving lots of calls about incidents on roads across Devon and Cornwall this morning. Please only travel if absolutely necessary; drive at an appropriate speed and allow extra distance between other vehicles.”

Public transport disruption

Stagecoach has confirmed its 38 service in Ashburton is unable to operate on its usual route due to flooding and will divert until conditions improve. 

UPDATE: 9:37am - StagecoachSW via X - "Barnstaple due to a down tree on the Muddiford road all 301 services will be diverting via Braunton once they have left NDDH. sorry for any inconvenience caused."

Passengers are advised to check live service updates before setting out.

Power cuts reported across Devon

The severe weather has led to power outages in parts of Barnstaple, Exmouth, Newton Abbot, Torquay, and Totnes, with more than 100 properties affected. 

The National Grid expects most supplies to be restored by late morning, but warns that further disruption remains possible while Storm Bram continues.

Safety guidance

Authorities are urging residents and motorists to take precautions as weather conditions remain volatile:

  • Allow extra travel time
  • Avoid driving through floodwater
  • Check live traffic and weather updates before travelling
  • Report new hazards if it is safe to do so

Conditions are expected to fluctuate throughout the day as Storm Bram continues to move across the region.
