A teenage cyclist from Ivybridge has received recognition from Devon and Cornwall Police after his quick thinking helped to save a woman’s life.

Arthur Good, aged 13, was cycling in Ivybridge when he witnessed a woman being assaulted.

The victim had suffered serious injuries and members of her family at the scene were extremely distressed.

Arthur immediately called police, calmly giving details of what he had seen and clearly explaining his location.

Officers were able to reach the scene quickly and provide urgent help to the woman.

Police say Arthur’s actions may have prevented the situation from becoming even more serious.

Arthur received a Chief Superintendent’s Commendation at a police awards ceremony held in Torquay, which celebrated the actions of officers, staff, volunteers and members of the public from across South Devon and Dartmoor.

Arthur’s father, Tristan Good, attended the ceremony and said he was proud of his son.

Mr Good has recently joined Devon and Cornwall Police himself as a Police Community Support Officer based in South Devon.

Arthur was one of around 50 people recognised on the night for acts of bravery, professionalism and commitment to helping others.

Speaking at the event, South Devon Police Commander Chief Superintendent Roy Linden praised those receiving awards.

He said the ceremony was an opportunity to recognise people who put others first and make a real difference in difficult situations.

Several other awards were presented during the evening, commending those who have made an impact around the county.

Police Constable Simon Cooper was recognised for rescuing a teenage boy who was caught in a rip current at Hope Cove while he was off duty.

The boy was pulled from dangerous sea conditions and later recovered after being treated by lifeguards.

Members of the public were also commended during the event, with one man praised for providing crucial information after a stabbing in Babbacombe, helping officers quickly locate and arrest a suspect.

Detective officers were honoured for their work on complex investigations, including cases involving serious offences, where long-term efforts led to convictions and lengthy prison sentences.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the awards highlighted the importance of both public vigilance and professional dedication in keeping communities safe.

Chief Superintendent Linden said he was “humbled” by the actions of those recognised and congratulated them on their contributions, adding that support from families and communities played an important role in their achievements.

Police say Arthur’s actions in Ivybridge show how members of the public, regardless of age, can make a vital difference by speaking up and calling for help when something is wrong.
