A freshwater conservation event will return to West Devon in two weeks’ time, offering a day of activities focused on fly fishing.

The South West Fly Fair is set to take place on Sunday 22 February at Roadford Lake, near the A30 between Launceston and Okehampton.

It is hosted by South West Lakes Trust, the charity that manages the site.

Organisers say the fair is aimed at both experienced anglers and families who want to learn more about fly fishing.

Activities planned for the day include fly-tying and casting demonstrations, hands-on “have a go” sessions, exhibitor stalls as well as expert talks.

Among those expected to attend are world champion fly caster Hywel Morgan and Shaun Leonard, director of the Wild Trout Trust.

Trade stands will sell new and second-hand fishing tackle and equipment, and food and drink will be available from the on-site café.

The fair will run from 10am to 3pm, with entry at £7 for adults when booked in advance, rising to £10 on the day.

Under-18s can attend free of charge, and all tickets include parking and entry into a raffle.

South West Lakes Trust says the event has become a regular fixture in the region’s fly-fishing calendar, attracting visitors from across Devon, Cornwall and beyond.

Leon Fisher, Head of Fisheries at South West Lakes Trust, said the event was designed to be accessible to a wide audience.

“It’s a chance for people to see the sport up close, speak to experts and enjoy a day by the lake, whether they fish regularly or are completely new to it,” he said.

Roadford Lake lies on the edge of Dartmoor and is one of several inland water sites managed by the trust for conservation and recreation.

Tickets can be booked in advance through South West Lakes Trust’s website.
