Sir Mel Stride, MP for Central Devon, has made two recent visits in Devon, meeting representatives at Buckfast Abbey and attending a community fundraising event in Okehampton.

The Shadow Chancellor visited Buckfast Abbey near Buckfastleigh to learn more about its role as a place of worship, heritage site and visitor destination.

Founded in 1018, Buckfast Abbey is an active Benedictine monastery and is one of Devon’s most recognisable historic landmarks.

The site attracts visitors throughout the year to its abbey church, grounds, gardens and visitor facilities.

During the visit, the Conservative MP met with senior representatives to discuss the Abbey’s place in the local economy, as well as the challenges and opportunities faced by large heritage sites.

Discussions included how the Abbey balances its religious life with welcoming visitors and maintaining historic buildings.

The Central Devon MP said: “Buckfast Abbey is an extraordinary place with deep roots in Devon’s history and a vital role today as a place of worship and a visitor destination.”

Chief executive Philip Arkwright said the Abbey were ‘delighted’ to welcome Sir Mel.

“His interest in the Abbey’s heritage, community and contribution to Devon is greatly appreciated” he said.

In a separate engagement, Sir Mel attended the Okehampton District Round Table Awards and Charity Giving Evening.

The event, previously reported by the Moorlander, recognised the organisation’s fundraising activities over the past year.

Raised funds are distributed to support a wide range of community projects across the town and surrounding area.

Sir Mel thanked those involved for their time and commitment, noting the role played by volunteers, sponsors and families who support the fundraising efforts.

“Okehampton District Round Table does incredible work for local charities and community causes. It was a real pleasure to be there to thank everyone involved” he said.

Chris Brown-Martin, chairman of Okehampton District Round Table, said the organisation was pleased to welcome Sir Mel to the event.

He added: “His support and words of encouragement mean a great deal to our members, volunteers and families, and help motivate us to keep growing and giving back to the community.”

Both visits formed part of Sir Mel’s ongoing engagement with community groups, heritage organisations and charities across his constituency.
