Emergency services are at the scene of a significant fire at a specialist school in Okehampton.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed to The Moorlander its control room received multiple 999 calls reporting a fire at The Promise School in Dartmoor View. Plumes of thick black smoke and flames have been seen from across the town and the surrounding area.
A large-scale multi-agency operation is currently under way at the site. The fire service has sent six fire engines, two aerial ladder platforms, and two water carriers to tackle the fire.
Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police and crews from the South Western Ambulance Service are also in attendance. The Moorlander newspaper has contacted police for further information regarding the scale of the damage and any potential road closures.
The Promise School is a specialist academy for children with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. It officially opened in September 2022, moving into its purpose-built campus at Dartmoor View to provide places for up to 100 pupils aged between four and 16. The school is part of the Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust.
