Residents in Moretonhampstead are being invited to a grand opening event at the town’s parish hall following the completion of a major community-led upgrade.

The open day at Moretonhampstead Parish Hall will take place on Saturday 18 April from 11am until 4pm, showcasing a new commercial-grade kitchen, expanded storage and improved disabled access.

The project was inspired by a weekly food hub run at the hall by local organisations Wellmoor and Knead to Connect CIC.

Wellmoor and Knead to Connect CIC are local groups that provide affordable food and social support for people affected by the rising cost of living.

Organisers said the idea for the upgrade came from plans to expand the hub’s work by offering cookery workshops using fresh, basic ingredients.

Fundraising began in July of last year, with a community crowdfunder raising more than £12,500 including Gift Aid.

Additional funding included £20,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund, more than £9,000 from the Jubilee Village Hall Fund, £2,000 from Devon County Council and £700 from Moretonhampstead Parish Council.

In total, more than £46,000 was raised to renovate the parish hall.

Work on the project began in January 2026 and was largely carried out by volunteers, who contributed more than 1,000 hours of labour.

Trustee Julia Mockett said: “The project could not have been done without the support of the community. We are thrilled with the result and we’re keen to show off what everyone’s efforts have achieved.”

On the open day, visitors will be able to see the new facilities while enjoying refreshments including coffee, cake, soup lunches and cream teas organised by the hall’s food club. Entertainment is also planned.

The town’s library, currently based in the hall while its building is being repaired, will host activities during the morning.

Ms Mockett added: “Our hall is such an important asset to the town providing fundraising opportunities to local groups, a space for social gatherings and family celebrations.”

Organisers say the new kitchen will allow the hall to host a wider range of community activities, including cookery sessions and catered events.
