A long-term gas main replacement project on Ford Park Road and extensive overnight resurfacing works on Embankment Road, Laira Bridge Road and Mannamead Road are among the roadworks set to affect motorists across Plymouth during the first week of June

Motorists across Plymouth are being warned to expect delays this week as a series of major roadworks projects get underway, including a long-term gas main replacement scheme and extensive overnight resurfacing works on some of the city's busiest routes.

Major gas works begin

The most significant disruption starts on Monday, June 1, when Wales and West Utilities begins gas main replacement works on Ford Park Road.

The project will require a westbound directional road closure between Ridge Park Avenue and Pentillie Road and is scheduled to remain in place until July 17.

The utility scheme will also result in road closures on Dale Gardens and Stangray Avenue until June 15, while a separate gas main replacement project is due to begin on Somerset Place from June 3 and continue until June 23.

Overnight resurfacing programme

Drivers are also being advised to prepare for a major resurfacing programme in the east of the city.

From Monday evening, overnight works will affect Laira Bridge Road and Elliot Road, with bus lane closures and directional road closures in place between 7pm and 6am through to Saturday, June 6.

The resurfacing programme expands from Tuesday night, with further restrictions planned on Embankment Road, Langham Place, Exeter Street, Tothill Road and Cattedown Roundabout. Several of the works involve road closures, lane restrictions and bus lane suspensions during overnight hours.

Plymouth City Council says the resurfacing works are aimed at improving road conditions on key commuter routes but motorists travelling through the Cattedown and Embankment Road areas may wish to consider alternative routes during the evening.

Other roads affected

Elsewhere, a number of shorter-term schemes are scheduled throughout the week.

Efford Lane will be closed between Old Laira Road and Higher Efford Road from June 1 to June 4 for gully works, while South West Water is carrying out repairs on Baring Street Lane East between June 1 and June 3.

Billacombe Road will remain under lane restrictions until June 12 as footway preparation works are completed, and telecoms works will affect traffic on the St Budeaux Bypass throughout the working week.

Further traffic restrictions

Further temporary traffic management measures are planned across the city, including signal-controlled works on Tailyour Road, Vauxhall Street, Merafield Road, Ham Drive and Church Road, alongside patching and maintenance schemes on roads including Barne Road, Plymstock Road, Furzehatt Road and St Vincent Street.

Additional overnight resurfacing works are also scheduled on Mannamead Road from June 3 to June 9, with road closures moving between sections of the route as the project progresses.

Drivers urged to plan ahead

Plymouth City Council maintains all public roads in the city apart from the A38, which is managed by National Highways.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time for journeys and check for updates before travelling as traffic management measures may change during the course of the works.
