Plymouth drivers warned as major roadworks and A38 closures begin this week

A new wave of roadworks is starting across Plymouth, with traffic restrictions, overnight A38 lane closures and month-long utility projects expected to affect commuters and residents across the city
Drivers across Plymouth are being warned to expect delays this week as a series of roadworks, road closures and traffic restrictions get under way, including overnight lane closures on the A38 and several long-term schemes lasting into August.
Plymouth City Council has published its latest list of planned roadworks covering the period from Monday, July 27, to Saturday, August 1.
Among the longest-running schemes is the closure of the footbridge on Embankment Road, which begins on Monday, July 27 and is expected to remain in place until Friday, August 21. The closure will be in operation 24 hours a day while Plymouth City Council carries out footbridge works.
Another major programme starts on Monday, July 27, when Wales and West Utilities begins gas main replacement work affecting Glen Road.
Temporary two-way traffic signals will remain in place around the clock until August 9.
Several more long-term utility projects are also due to begin this week.
Gas main replacement work will close Houndiscombe Road, Sutherland Road and Sutherland Place from July 27 until August 24, while further gas works will close Elizabeth Place and Endsleigh Place from July 31 until August 28.
Plymouth City Council will also begin safety improvements at the junction of Pearn Road and Higher Compton Road on Monday, July 27.
Three-way traffic signals will be in place between 8am and 6pm until August 24.
Drivers using the A38 should also plan ahead. National Highways is carrying out survey work between Thursday, July 30, and Saturday, August 1, with mobile lane closures affecting both eastbound and westbound approaches to Manadon Roundabout between 8pm and 6am each night.
Elsewhere, a number of shorter schemes will affect traffic throughout the week, including patching works, drainage investigations, street lighting improvements, vegetation clearance and telecoms work.
Road closures are planned at locations including Athenaeum Street, Guildhall Square, Southway Drive, Woodford Avenue, Randwick Park Road, Penlee Road, Moor View and Efford Lane, while temporary traffic signals or lane closures will be in place on roads including Outland Road, North Prospect Road, Alexandra Road, Honicknowle Lane, Powisland Drive and St Budeaux Bypass.
Plymouth City Council says roadwork dates and times can change at short notice and advises motorists to check advance warning signs on site before travelling.
The council is responsible for maintaining all public roads in Plymouth except the A38, which is maintained by National Highways.
