South West Devon farmers voice growing concerns during high-profile visit

Agricultural challenges facing South West Devon were put under the spotlight during a gathering in Plympton attended by farmers, NFU members and Shadow Farming Minister Robbie Moore MP, with rural issues dominating discussions
A South West Devon MP recently hosted the Shadow Farming Minister Robbie Moore MP as he visited Plympton to meet farmers, volunteers and members of the National Farmers' Union (NFU) from across the region.
The event, hosted by Conservative MP Rebecca Smith, focused on the future of British farming and the challenges facing the agricultural sector.
Mr Moore, who serves as Shadow Minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, was joined by Lord Roborough, who also serves on the opposition's Environment, Food and Rural Affairs team.
During the meeting, farmers discussed a range of issues affecting rural communities, including the pressures on family farms and the importance of maintaining domestic food production.
Agriculture remains a significant part of the economy across South West Devon and Dartmoor, with many farming businesses facing ongoing challenges.
Rebecca Smith MP said: "It was fantastic to welcome Robbie Moore to South West Devon and to see such a strong turnout from local farmers and supporters.
"Farming is at the heart of so many communities across South West Devon.
“Our farmers work incredibly hard to produce our food, support local jobs and care for the countryside, often while facing significant pressures and uncertainty.
"Events like this are so important because they give people the opportunity to share their experiences directly and ensure that the voices of rural communities continue to be heard."
The visit formed part of Rebecca Smith’s ongoing engagement with farmers and rural businesses in her constituency.
Attendees were given the opportunity to share their experiences directly with politicians and discuss issues affecting both the farming industry and rural communities.
Following the event, Ms Smith said she would continue to raise concerns affecting local farming communities.
Rebecca also reiterated that she would “ensure that the challenges facing the sector are heard by the Government”.
