South Hams District Council is calling on primary school pupils to get creative and show why recycling matters

Primary school children across the South Hams are being invited to enter an art competition, with winning designs set to appear on the district’s new waste and recycling vehicles.

South Hams District Council is asking pupils in Years 1 to 6 to create a picture showing why recycling matters or how to recycle household materials.

“The winning designs will be proudly displayed on the doors of one of the council’s new waste and recycling vehicles - the winning artists will also get their names emblazoned on the vehicle for the next 12 months,” South Hams District Council said.

Children can focus on how recycling helps protect beaches, the countryside and the wider environment, or illustrate how to recycle materials such as cardboard, plastic, glass and food waste using the council’s kerbside collection containers.

Councillor Julian Brazil, South Hams Lead Member for Waste and Recycling, said: “Recycling is one of the simplest things we can all do at home to help protect our environment, and we think that our school children can help inspire us to all recycle even more.

“I can’t wait to see the imagination and enthusiasm that South Hams primary school children bring to this subject.”

Entries must be submitted on A4 paper in landscape format.

The council is looking for creative, eye-catching designs with a clear message and asks children to use paint or bright felt-tip pens rather than pencils.

Each entry must include the child’s name, age, primary school and year group, along with a parent or guardian’s name and contact details.

Entries can be posted to South Hams District Council Recycling Competition, South Hams District Council, Follaton House, Plymouth Road, Totnes, Devon, TQ9 5NE, or delivered to reception at Follaton House.

Digital entries can be emailed to [email protected].

The deadline is Friday 13 November 2026.
