Great wins for Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City

Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle are both in the hat for the FA Cup Fourth Round draw after superb victories over higher-league opposition.

Argyle made the daunting trip to Premier League Brentford, taking on a side with a superb home record in the top flight and the Bees resisted the temptation to make wholesale changes.

In stark contrast, the Greens have yet to record a league win on the road but were boosted by the news that Austrian Miron Muslic was named as the new Head Coach at Home Park less than 24 hours before kick-off.

Muslic watched on from the stands, as Argyle produced an outstanding defensive display, limiting Brentford to minor chances throughout, and the winner arrived eight minutes from time, when Morgan Whittaker danced across the edge of the penalty before planting a left-foot strike into the bottom corner.

The Grecians hosted improving Championship outfit Oxford United and were on the backfoot when Matt Phillips produced a clinical finish to edge the visitors ahead on 14 minutes.

Exeter’s response was full of character and quality.

Demetri Mitchell quickly levelled the scores with a sumptuous volley and the Grecians took control of proceedings. Mitchell grabbed his second and a deserved lead for City five minutes before the break.

The second period was equally impressive for Exeter, Vincent Harper sealing a 3-1 victory as Tyler Goodrham was given a late red card for the deflated visitors.
