Cornish club on the brink of glory

In a new series for your local paper, we look at regional sports stories outside our immediate sphere of interest.

In this first attempt, as well as enjoying the return of point-to-point racing and a superb result for Plymouth Argyle, we take a look at the amazing season being enjoyed by Truro City in the National League South.

After losing long-serving manager Paul Wotton to Torquay United at the end of last season, Truro turned to the vast experience of John Askey, a legendary player for Macclesfield Town who guided the club back to the Football League. He has also managed York City and Hartlepool United.

The move south has worked wonders, with Truro enjoying life at their new Langarth home, and with just three games left to play in the regular season, the Cornishmen have an incredible chance of achieving automatic promotion to the National League Premier.

Wotton produced miracles in keeping Truro in this division last year and he is now working that magic at Plainmoor, which all sets up things perfectly for Torquay’s trip to Cornwall on Good Friday.

The incredible promotion race in this division has garnered national attention and the ingredients are in place for a thrilling Easter weekend.

As it stands, Truro are top on 83 points, ahead of Worthing on goal difference. Eastbourne sit third on 81 points, Torquay fourth on 80 points and Dorking fifth on 79. As such, Truro City v Torquay United is an epic encounter at this late stage of the campaign. Just for added flavour, Eastbourne host Worthing on the same day.

After the visit from the Gulls, Truro travel to Weston-super-Mare, another club chasing a play-off position, and they finish at home to St Albans. Putting all professional partiality to one side, it would be fabulous to see Truro and Torquay United take the two promotion places, one automatic and one through the play-offs.
