Just three runners went to post for the opening contest on the card so while it may have lacked depth, it delivered a clear verdict.
Centara, trained by Paul Nicholls, asserted control early, jumped with assurance and kept a safe margin in the closing stages to take the spoils and win for the fourth time in five starts.
Nine went to post for race two on the Newton Abbot card and Dickens, ridden by Luke Scott, was heavily backed in the pre-race betting. Jumping well throughout, took up the initiative on the run to the last, and held on to win by about 3½ lengths.
Jaminska took the spoils in race three of the afternoon as a 7/2 chance, scoring by two and a half lengths from At The Oche, securing a victory for trainer Jane Williams and jockey Ciaran Gethings in the class four contest.
Touchwood Express was sent off a 15/8 favourite for the class five handicap hurdle, race four on the card, and duly obliged for trainers Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies, a three-length winner from main market rival Tropical Speed in second.
Bagheera Ginge bagged a second win on the card for the Twiston-Davies' as he scored in the class three handicap chase over the three and a quarter mile trip, the penultimate race of the afternoon at Newton Abbot, a cosy eight and half length victor from Killer Kane. He tracked the pace, picked his ground well between fences, and turned on the power in the closing stages to win very handily.
Finally, the card came to a close with a two mile and five furlong handicap hurdle and this one went the way of The Height Of Fame for trainer Keiran Burke and jockey Gavin Sheehan, a half a length winner from Striking A Pose (7/1).
