Super Saturday in the Premier Division delivers a spectacular football weekend

Fabulous Saturday of football in the Torbay Clearance Services South Devon League

Plymouth True Blues visited Ilsington Villa as Premier Division leaders in the South Devon Football League and came away in third place following a 6-2 defeat at the hands of the Moorlanders.

A Callum Noyce hat-trick and strikes from Jack Dixon and Daniel Langford in front of a decent crowd once again proved why people are of the view that this season’s SDFL Premier Division is the best adult competition in the county.

Windmill FC inflicted more misery on Lakeside Athletic in the big Plymouth derby, again played in front of a good crowd, a 3-2 victory for Glynn Kellow’s ream thanks to goals from Chey Hammond (2) and Myles Hunt moves them into third place and leaves Lakeside’s impressive run of results over the past three seasons confined to the history books.

Newton Abbot 66 are now just three points behind the leaders with a game in hand following a fine 5-3 victory over East Allington United in what was a very entertaining game. The Pirates may be fifth from bottom but they are only six points off second place with two games in hand.

Newton Abbot Spurs 2nds picked up another three points in their quest to retain the title, a 4-0 win over a good Kingsteignton Athletic side puts them in a good place to challenge once again. For the visitors, they will consider this a game they could have won but fell short on the day.

And in the two big games at the bottom, Buckfastleigh Rangers picked up their first win of the season with a 2-1 success over Totnes and Dartington, thanks mainly to the hard work of the background team in bringing in some new players to keep the club alive.

Over at Windmill Hill, Torquay’s only Premier Division team, Waldon Athletic, saw their woes continue following a manager and player exodus to various other teams, a 9-0 loss at the hands of Chudleigh Athletic leaves the background team with decisions to make and hopefully they turn out to be the correct ones.

Gavin Lake scored five of the goals for the visitors and the home team ended the game with ten players after frustration crept in, Waldon are now the only team in the top division without a win after four games.

If the Premier Division is considered to be the best adult competition, then Division One must be the second best.

At the top, Mount Gould surrendered their 100% record at JC park where Brixham Town were on top form in a 2-1 win that puts the Fishermen two points clear of WBB, who were held to a 2-2 draw by bottom club Newton Abbot Spurs 3rds for their first point of the season.

Bovey Tracey look to have found some form at last, Ben Moyle scored two second-half goals to bring the points home from Beesands Rovers, who have slipped to fifth from bottom, yet only three points off second place in another very tight division.

Watcombe Wanderers also picked up three points after going close in recent weeks with a 2-1 win over a young Buckland Athletic side, goals from skipper Lawrence Macloud and Jack White puts the Greens level on points with Mount Gould and Bovey Tracey.

Barton Athletic and Elburton Villa both settled for a point apiece in a 1-1 draw in an entertaining game at Barton Downs, which puts both teams in mid-table after five games.

Division Two is still taking shape but Ashburton are now playing with some confidence after their record-breaking score line two weeks ago. Visitors Ivybridge Town were forced to leave empty-handed after a 5-2 defeat, thanks to goals from Derek Cartmill, Kameron Pouladdej and Alan Savage.

Drake FC were gifted the points when Upton Athletic failed to travel, those points put them three clear at the top for now. Second-placed Babbacombe Corries’ progress was stalled by bottom club Newton Rovers in a 2-2 draw at Long Lane, the point was the first of the season for Rovers in a division where every team now has something on the board after five games.

East Allington United 2nds and Paignton Saints 2nds both picked up their second wins of the season over Paignton Villa 2nds and Harbertonford to slip into mid-table.

At the top of Division Three the Kingskerswell machine keeps on rolling, a  9-1 victory over struggling Waldon Athletic 2nds puts them four points clear of Galmpton Utd in second place and eight points clear of the team in fourth.

In trying to keep pace with the leaders, the last thing Galmpton wanted was a local derby against Stoke Gabriel TP. Despite goals from Max Prestwood and Harley Hooper, they could not forge out a win and had to settle for a 2-2 draw. Stoke may be 7 points off of second place but they do have two games in hand.

Liverton United 2nds remain well placed. Despite ending the game with ten players, they held on against Ipplepen Athletic for a 2-1 win, thanks to goals from Kye Graham and Simon Ross. Kingsteignton Athletic 2nds are also looking good after a 4-2 win versus a Templar Way side that seem to be struggling of late having previously worn one of the pre-season favourite tags.

South Brent are also on the move in the right direction, a 4-0 win over pointless Totnes and Dartington 2nds puts them into mid-table and on course for a more stable season.

At the top of Division Four, local rivals Chudleigh Athletic 2nds and Teign Village are level on points after four games, Chudleigh took advantage of their neighbours having a free weekend by beating Bere Alston Utd by four goals to two in a challenging game for all.

Brixham Town 2nds are enjoying their football again, this week’s 2-1 win at Broadhempston United was a good result and sees them up to third place. Barton Athletic 2nds move up to fourth place following a 2-1 triumph at Paignton Villa 3rds and Paignton Saints comfortably won the basement battle at Bakers Park with a 6-0 win over Newton Rovers 2nds.

Games to catch this weekend

Just as supporters are catching their breath after a Super Saturday, along comes a couple of very attractive fixtures in the top division.

A trip to Kingsteignton could well be a good move to watch the clash with Newton 66, or perhaps a drive up to Ilsington Villa for the visit of East Allington United. Or a trip down to the green city for the return game between Lakeside and WindmillI just seven days after they met last week.

In Division One, Beesands Rovers play host to Barton Athletic for the first time in three seasons and Newton Spurs 3rds welcome Bovey Tracey to Chuley Road.

Division Two has a couple of big clashes, Babbacombe Corries welcome Drake FC to their new home ground at Long Lane for a first v second fixture and Ashburton play a Paignton Villa reserve team who have made a good start to this season.

In Division Three, Kingskerwell host Stoke Gabriel TP for a game that will be worth a watch as both of these teams could end the season in the top two places. In Division Four, Teign Village will give a locals welcome to Broadhempston, who could spring a surprise.

All of these games start at 2.30pm enjoy your grassroots football.
