The ultimate fantasy golf course in Devon completes the front nine

Building the perfect round of golf using only Devon courses and no course more than once

It is cold, wet and windy, pretty much the worst time of year to be playing golf, but spring is not too far away and the lush fairways and greens of Devon are awaiting our return.

To get you in the mood, we are taking on the challenge of building the ultimate golf course, but there are strict rules to this game.

We can only use a golf course once and their chosen hole number must correspond to the actual hole on that course. For example, the ultimate opening hole in Devon must also be the opening hole on that chosen course, and then the same course cannot be used again throughout the round.

Your challenge this summer is to play them all!

The ultimate 9th hole in Devon golf

#9 – Bigbury Golf Club – Par 5

The 9th at Bigbury Golf Club is a challenging, traditional par 5 that caps off the outward nine with a test of length, strategy and energy. From all tee boxes the hole plays uphill, demanding well-judged drives and thoughtful club selection from the second shot as the fairway steadily climbs toward a generously mounded green.

The fairway tends to favour shots from right to left, so positioning off the tee is critical if you want a clear angle into the mid-to-long approach. The uphill nature of the hole means that even shorter hitters should plan for an extra club on both the second and third shots, as the elevated green sits above much of the playing corridor and often plays longer than the yardage suggests.

Once on the green, players face another subtle challenge: the putting surface slopes from back to front, which can make downhill putts deceptively tricky and require careful attention to pace. Club-taking on the approach often defines whether a conservative par or an adventurous birdie look is on the cards.

Overall, the 9th is a finish to the turn that rewards thoughtful positioning and patience—a hole that can yield a scoring opportunity, but just as easily punish over-ambition.

Honourable Mentions

The 9th hole at Stover Golf Club near Newton Abbot is a cracking par 4 that demands straight and accurate driving before playing into a gently sloping green, while the 9th at Honiton Golf Club is a fabulous par 5 with views over the Otter Valley.
