A damp Saturday restricted South Devon grassroots football to just one league fixture, one Herald Cup tie, and a county cup clash between local sides—but it was still an eventful day at the top of Division Two.

All matches were played on artificial pitches due to the weather.

Watts, Blake & Bearne (WBB) in County Senior Cup Glory Watts, Blake & Bearne were the standout performers of the week, registering a comprehensive 3–0 victory over Paignton Villa in the County Senior Cup at South Devon College. Goals from Fraser Hossack, Billy Robbins, and Ant Williams secured WBB a quarter-final tie against Elmore 2nds in Tiverton, scheduled for February 21.

The win represents a remarkable turnaround for WBB. Just 12 months ago, the club presented a survival plan to the league management, and now they find themselves progressing deep into the cup with optimism about the season ahead.

Division Two Action: Babbacombe Corries Keep Pressure on Leaders Babbacombe Corries ensured a league fixture went ahead by hiring the 3G pitch at Paignton Community College. They welcomed a strong East Allington Utd 2nds side but still emerged 4–1 victors thanks to goals from Jake Blamey (2), Harry Witham, and Sam Quick.

The result moves Corries up to joint fourth alongside Paignton Villa 2nds, just a point behind Ivybridge Town. They remain second in the table with two games in hand, five points behind leaders Signal Box, who now hold a seven-point advantage after playing one extra match.

Herald Cup Drama: Saints Edge Spurs on Penalties The sole Herald Cup fixture saw Premier Division sides Paignton Saints and Newton Abbot Spurs 2nds clash at Coach Road. Jake Powell’s first-half strike gave Saints the lead, only for Aiden Blackie to equalise late, forcing extra time. Neither side could find a winner, and the game went to penalties, where Saints prevailed 5–4. The victorious side will now await their semi-final opponent.

Looking Ahead: Fixtures for Saturday, February 14

  • Division Three: Galmpton United host Premier Division outfit Windmill in a tricky Herald Cup tie, while WBB face Ashburton.
  • Premier Division: East Allington Utd host Newton Abbot 66, and Ilsington Villa take on Kingsteignton Ath.
  • Division Two: Signal Box meet Babbacombe Corries in a crucial clash at the top of the table.
  • Division Three: South Brent attempt to end Kingskerswell’s unbeaten run.

All fixtures are listed on the South Devon Football League Full Time website, with cup games kicking off at 2pm and league matches at 2.30pm.

Grassroots football continues to provide drama and excitement—weather permitting.
