The rumour mill is swirling rapidly around Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell amid speculation he is about to leave the club for Wigan Athletic.

Caldwell finished his playing career with the Latics and then stepped into coaching with the club, eventually taking over as manager for an 18-month reign in 2015. He later managed Chesterfield and Partick Thistle before being appointed City boss in 2022.

The door has reopened at Wigan following the dismissal of Ryan Lowe but Caldwell, while not ruling out any prospect a return north, was focussed on the Grecians’ visit from Northampton Town in Sky Bet League One.

If it was to be his last game in charge at St James Park, it was a fairly dour affair. Ilmari Niskanen shot wide with the best early chance before the Grecians took control with chances spurned by the impressive Timur Tutierov and Luca Woodhouse.

The Cobblers had their best opening when the ball ricocheted off the head of Jayden Wareham, forcing Joe Whitworth into a top save in sparing his team-mate’s blushes. Wareham then went close at the right end but there was no way through, and the next question lays at the door of Caldwell.
