Multiple fire crews and police officers remain at the scene as efforts continue to bring the incident under control.
Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Emergency services are currently at the scene of a large fire on Belgrave Road in Torquay…
“As a result of the fire, there is a large amount of smoke. Therefore the advice is for residents, and particularly those nearest to the hotel, to close all windows and doors to prevent any health issues.”
The building was described as “well alight”, with flames seen shooting through the roof, which was at risk of collapse. Dozens of firefighters have been using a turntable ladder and hose reels to tackle the blaze.
Thick black smoke has spread across the seafront and promenade, visible from a distance as large crowds gathered nearby during the Easter Sunday weekend.
Ash and debris from the fire have also fallen into the nearby Shedden Hill car park.
Police have closed Belgrave Road in both directions, with traffic moving slowly between Falkland Road and the A379, Torbay Road.
Motorists and pedestrians are being advised to avoid the area.
It is understood this is the second fire at the empty hotel in recent days.
Officers are appealing for information, with anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant footage, including CCTV or doorbell cameras, is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log number 348 of 05/04/2026.
