Latest fishing news from across Devon
The latest round of the Snowbee Top Rod competition fished for by the Kennick Flyfishers was held at their home reservoir on the edge of Dartmoor.
Ten anglers fished on a lovely sunny day with the Rhododendrons showing their lovely pink blooms. Thirty-eight Rainbow trout were caught with the whole of the water producing fish.
Best tactics were floating or intermediate lines with either damsel flies or small nymphs. Top angler was Alex Venn with Daren Penfold second and Chris Bolt, third.
Newton Abbot fishing Association waters are producing some nice fish with Crucian carp to 2lbs coming from Bradley Ponds with Carp, Tench and some good-sized Bream coming from various ponds in the Rackerhayes complex.
The latest round of the Tackle trader evening league rover was fished on Wheel Pond with Dean Bradford coming out victorious with 42lbs, Sam Powell took second spot with 41lbs 8oz and Shane Harper third with 40lbs.
Boat anglers fishing from Torbay’s charter boats are still catching plenty of Pollack and a few cod amongst them from the offshore wrecks. David Hayles, fishing aboard a private boat, found Smoothounds in good numbers.
From the shore, most of the action this week is centred on the Bristol Channel with Luke Rossiter fishing three marks and finding plenty of Thornback Rays, along with Dogfish, Eels and Gurnard.
Michael Head caught his first Blonde Ray. Smoothhounds featured in the catches of Will Middleton and Lere Dawe who recorded the best fish with a weight of 13lbs 6oz.
The Algar family targeted Rays with both children recording their best ever Smalleyed rays, Chloe’s weighing 8lbs 9oz and Leo’s 7lbs 3oz, with dad Lee having the best at 9lbs 10oz.
The only south coast fish recorded this week fell to the rod of Brixham SAC member Martin Lobb, a shore caught Bullhuss of 8lbs10oz.
For something as little different this week, I took my grandchildren to Newbarn angling centre where I hired Lily Pool for the day. Armed with maggots and various pellets, they had a great day, catching plenty of Rudd along with a few Roach and Perch.
There was a group of five or six Koi Carp swimming around for most of the day but, unfortunately, I couldn’t get them or any of the resident Tench to feed.
The highlight of the day was the barbecued hot dogs and bacon roll in fantastic surroundings. For a day like this, you can contact the bailiffs on 07848 377114. Tackle can be hired and bait is also available from the shop.
Entries are still being taken for our fish of the month competition kindly sponsored by sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Angling centre. Please email photos and catch reports to johnsherlockfish@gmaiil.com
