A Devon-born violinist who is building an international career will return to Exeter next month to perform as soloist in a special classical concert at St David’s Church.

Joel Munday, from Tedburn St Mary, will appear with the Isca Ensemble Southwest on Friday 21 February, under the direction of musical director Roger Hendy.

The concert will take place at St David’s Church in Exeter and will raise funds for the British Red Cross International Aid Appeal.

Joel, who graduated from the Royal College of Music, has established himself as a soloist and chamber musician and now performs regularly in the UK and abroad.

He was recently named a Tillett Debut Artist and was one of 11 musicians worldwide to receive the London Symphony Orchestra’s Conservatoire Scholarship for the 2023–24 season.

His professional solo debut came in March 2025, when he performed with the London Mozart Players at Exeter Cathedral, making his return to the city a significant local appearance.

He is supported by the UK Artists Directory and Making Music, and is known for performing both established classical repertoire and contemporary works.

The programme for the Exeter concert includes Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro Overture, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Romance No. 2, followed by Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor.

For the Beethoven concerto, Joel has chosen to perform the cadenzas written by composer Alfred Schnittke.

Inspired by recordings and masterclasses with violinist Vadim Gluzman, the cadenzas are notable for their polystylistic approach, incorporating references to a wide range of well-known violin concertos and linking Beethoven’s music with later musical traditions.

Joel currently performs on a modern violin made in 2024 by London-based luthier Andreas Hudelmayer, alongside a professional bow by Daniel Schmidt.

The instruments were acquired with support from more than 100 donors.

The concert begins at 7pm.

Tickets cost £18 and are available in advance online or on the door.
