In the competitive world of Britain's beloved fish and chips, a young Torquay talent is making waves – and it's all down to hard graft behind the fryer.
Charlie James, from Pier Point Bar & Restaurant on Torquay's harbourside, has secured a coveted spot in the top 5 finalists nationally for the Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year 2026, organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF). The category spotlights rising stars under 25 in the trade, judged on skills, creativity, technique, and innovation in everything from batter consistency to portion presentation.
The finalists - announced late 2025 and narrowed down after initial entries and a dedicated "Young Fish Frier Day" of challenges - include Charlie alongside other young talents from across the UK. The ultimate winner will be crowned at the NFFF's National Fish & Chip Awards ceremony on 25 February 2026 in London.
Charlie's achievement comes hot on the heels of Pier Point's separate success in Fry Magazine's 2026 Fry Awards, where the restaurant was named one of the UK's top 10 Best Fish & Chip Restaurants – the only Devon entry in that category.
Devon still had plenty to cheer about at the Fry Awards, with just two county takeaways named in the UK Top 50 – including Brixham favourite David’s Fish & Chips
The team, including Charlie and Lorraine Arnold, discussed the judging rigour and their pride in the achievement during a lively chat on BBC Radio Devon's John Acres at Breakfast show (21 January 2026). The segment highlighted the dedication required to stand out in an industry facing rising costs and fierce competition, with Pier Point's harbourside spot praised for fresh, locally sourced fish and chips served with panoramic views.
Organisers at the NFFF emphasise that these young friers represent the future of the sector - keeping traditions alive while pushing standards higher. As one industry update put it, the finalists are "the future of fish and chips."
For Torquay locals and visitors alike, it's a reminder that award-winning excellence is right on the doorstep. Whether grabbing a classic cod and chips or celebrating with a sea-view meal, Pier Point is clearly frying at the top of its game. Next stop: fingers crossed for Charlie at the February finals.
