Kerry Hill Sheep
The livestock committee of the Devon County Show has revealed plans to introduce four new breed categories at the upcoming event in May, marking a significant expansion in the show's offerings.
The Devon County Show is scheduled to take place from Thursday, May 16th to Saturday, May 18th at Westpoint in Exeter.
Among the breeds making their debut at the show is the Red Poll Cattle breed, a multi-purpose cattle known for its docile nature and low-input requirements.
Once on the rare breeds survival trust watchlist, the Red Poll Cattle breed will now be showcased at the Devon County Show for the first time in its 150-year history.
While primarily used as suckler cows, a number of milking herds still exist, boasting an average yield of 5,000 litres at 4.2 percent butterfat and 3.5 percent protein.
In addition to the Red Poll Cattle breed, two new native sheep breeds will be introduced to the show's sheep section.
The Kerry Hill breed, originating from the hills around the small town of Kerry, has seen a resurgence in numbers after being included on a list of Rare Breeds.
Known for its distinctive black and white face and legs, the Kerry Hill breed has become increasingly popular among smallholders.
Similarly, the Llanwenog breed, characterised by its lack of horns, black face and ears, and tuft of fleece on the head, will also be showcased.
Renowned for its versatility and excellent meat production, the Llanwenog breed is valued for its hardy and docile temperament, making it an economical choice for farmers.
Rounding out the new additions is the Kunekune pig class in the pig section.
As the smallest domesticated pig breed, Kunekune pigs are known for their placid and friendly demeanour, as well as their ability to thrive on human company and grass-based diets.
The committee have said the Kunekune is now a popular breed for small holders.
Becky Hurd, Competition Coordinator said: “Livestock has always been the heart and soul of the Devon County Show since it first started back in 1872 and will continue to remain its principal raison d’etre. Casting the spotlight on some of these breeds at the Devon County Show is a positive step towards securing their future.”
