Stand up to stop VAWAG
Devon is joining the global campaign to eliminate violence against women with 16 Days of Action, a series of events running from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day. This initiative, part of the United Nations’ annual campaign, is supported locally by the Interpersonal and Gender-Based Violence and Abuse Partnership Board, under the Safer Devon Partnership.
Domestic abuse, sexual violence, and other forms of violence against women are alarmingly prevalent in Devon, with tens of thousands estimated to be affected annually. This campaign aims to unite communities, raise awareness about the support available to survivors, and advocate for the prevention and elimination of such violence.
Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Communities, and Equality, said:
"The high numbers mean that it is likely that most women you know will have experienced a form of gender-based violence at some point in their lives. This is unacceptable and must not be tolerated. I fully support this campaign as it reminds us of our collective responsibility to look out for one another."
The campaign features a diverse range of activities and events designed to engage the public, support survivors, and promote awareness:
Flashmob performance: Princesshay, Exeter.
Reclaim the Streets vigil: Candlelit vigil in Bideford.
Storytelling workshop: Barnstaple Library.
Vigil and petal scattering: Outside Barnstaple Museum.
Big yoga event: Hosted by Active Devon.
Displays and activities: At Positive Lights, Exeter.
Reclaim the Night marches: In Exeter and Barnstaple.
Online webinar: Focused on identifying signs of domestic abuse in young people and providing trauma support.

Liz Cirasuolo, Strategic Lead for Violence Against Women and Girls in Devon, spoke of the importance of collective action:
"Because these issues are so widespread in our communities and affect all of us, it is paramount that communities take action in standing up to violence against women and girls. 16 Days of Action is an opportunity for all of us to get involved, learn more, and show our support to victims and survivors in Devon."
The 16 Days of Action campaign has a history rooted in advocacy for women’s rights. Originating from the 1991 Women’s Global Leadership Institute, the campaign has grown to encompass participants from over 180 countries. In Devon, the campaign shines a light on the shared commitment of local authorities, charities, and community groups to end violence against women and girls.
Councillor Croad concluded:
"These events are hosted by a range of organisations with a united purpose: to call for the prevention and elimination of violence and coercive behaviour against women and girls. We encourage everyone to participate and stand together in this critical effort."
