Firefighters have spent a second day tackling a major fire at a specialist school in Okehampton, which has been forced to close indefinitely.
As of Monday morning, February 23, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews are still working at The Promise School in Dartmoor View.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed to The Moorlander that: "This morning, Monday 23 February, Exeter Road between Fatherford Lane and Texaco remains closed which will cause some disruption in the area. Highways are managing road closures."
It is understood the cause of the fire is not thought to be suspicious.
The fire, which broke out at approximately 3.30pm on Sunday, has caused "extensive damage" to the roof and interior of the £10.7 million building.
In an update released this morning, a spokesperson for the fire service said: "We have been fighting the fire overnight. We still have three fire appliances at the scene plus special appliances, and firefighters continue to use aerial ladder platforms, water jets, and a high-volume pump to bring water to the scene."
The school was due to welcome pupils back today following the half-term break. However, Principal Quentin Gunderson has confirmed the site remains restricted for safety reasons.
"A serious fire has occurred on the school site today, the cause of which is unknown," Mr. Gunderson said. "Due to the extent of the damage, the school will need to be closed for the immediate future."
The school is currently working with the Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust to arrange provision for ongoing learning for its 100 pupils. Families are being urged to stay away from the site.
The Promise School is a specialist academy for children with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. The purpose-built campus officially opened in September 2022 at a cost of £10.7 million.
In its most recent Ofsted inspection on 17 June 2025, the school received inadequate ratings for its quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, and leadership and management. The inspection rated the school's personal development as requiring improvement.
Residents in the area have been advised to keep windows closed while the emergency response continues.
