Residents of Tavistock will soon regain a cherished community service with the reopening of the Tavistock Police Station's public enquiry office. The new facility is set to open its doors on Monday, 20th January 2025, offering face-to-face access to the police for the first time since the closure of the previous office in Bedford Square in 2011.
The closure of the original office was a significant blow to the community. At the time, authorities cited the growing reliance on phone and online crime reporting as a reason for the decision. However, the absence of a physical presence where residents could directly interact with police officers left many feeling disconnected.
For years, Tavistock residents have called for the restoration of this service, and the new enquiry office marks a significant step in rebuilding that vital connection.
Sgt Tom Ottley, head of Tavistock’s neighbourhood policing team, announced the news just before Christmas, with a festive touch, saying: "As an early Christmas present from us to you, we would like to announce the opening date of Tavistock Police Station's new enquiry office. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the team at Tavistock."
Sgt Ottley, who previously served in Plymouth before transferring to West Devon, acknowledged the widespread community demand for this facility. "The loss of the old office in Bedford Square was a real loss to the community," he said. "Since I’ve been in West Devon, people have been very vocal about how much they missed it. The new enquiry office gives people another way to contact us and helps us stay better connected with our community."
He admitted to tirelessly advocating for the project, adding: "It’s the first thing I’m asked about. Now, it’s happening, and it’s great news that shows we listen to our community’s concerns."
The reopening is expected to be warmly received by Tavistock residents, many of whom have lamented the inability to discuss concerns in person with a local officer. With this new office, the police aim to strengthen ties with the community, providing a more personal and accessible approach to public safety.
As the team prepares for the January opening, Sgt Ottley and his officers are hopeful this initiative will foster a renewed sense of trust and collaboration between the police and the people of Tavistock.
The new office will be open Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 3pm, and includes disabled parking at the station's front car park. For those using GPS, the station’s postcode is PL19 9FD, with additional public parking available at Abbey Rise.
