The poignant and important story of the Windrush Generation will come to life at Moretonhampstead Library on Saturday, 25th January 2025, with a performance of ‘Farewell Jamaica’.

This powerful play follows the journey of a man leaving Jamaica to seek a brighter future in post-WWII Britain, answering the call to help rebuild England. Written by Hayley-Ann Dunstan and performed by Nev Connor, the play has already captivated audiences across Devon, including a sold-out show at Okehampton Library last year.

The play is part of a wider programme of events aimed at sharing and preserving the stories of the Windrush Generation, many of whom faced adversity and discrimination while contributing significantly to the rebuilding of post-war Britain. ‘Farewell Jamaica’ highlights the resilience, hope, and struggles faced by these individuals as they sought a new life in a foreign land.

The performance at Moretonhampstead Library is part of a series of library-based events subsidised by Libraries Unlimited, the charity responsible for running 54 libraries across Devon. Libraries Unlimited received a substantial grant of £720,369 from Arts Council England in 2022 to enhance its cultural programming, which includes music, films, workshops, and community events.

Rae Hoole, Creative Communities Producer at Libraries Unlimited, said: “We’re proud to share this story of the Windrush Generation to ensure their contribution is not forgotten. It celebrates the grit and determination that allowed them to forge their paths and become part of the UK’s rich and diverse heritage.”

She continued: “This play is a wonderful way to learn about the struggles and triumphs of those who came to Britain, and we hope it sparks curiosity and conversation about this pivotal moment in British history. Our libraries offer plenty of resources to help people explore this era further.”

‘Farewell Jamaica’ was created by Nev Connor, a former NHS worker and soldier of mixed Irish and Jamaican heritage, and writer Hayley-Ann Dunstan, who also descends from the Windrush Generation. The play originally debuted at St Margaret’s School in Torquay as a way to educate and inspire young people about diversity and migration.

Nev, who plays the lead role of Neville in the play, explained how the idea for the performance came about. “I was asked to talk about diversity at a school, but I felt I could convey my message more effectively through a performance,” Nev said. “As someone with Windrush heritage, I wanted to show how the Windrush Generation responded to a call and helped shape British history. The play tells the story of my character, Neville, as he journeys to Britain after WWII to help rebuild the ‘Motherland.’ His story is one of resilience in the face of adversity and determination against discrimination.”

‘Farewell Jamaica’ will be performed at Moretonhampstead Library on Saturday, 25th January 2025, from 10:30 to 11:30am. Tickets are £2, and children aged 6 and above are welcome to attend.

With its rich blend of history, culture, and personal storytelling, this play offers a unique and educational experience for all attendees, ensuring that the legacy of the Windrush Generation is remembered and celebrated.
