Police in Tavistock are stepping up their efforts to help local businesses fight crime with the launch of a new initiative aimed at reducing criminal activity in the town.

The Safer Business Action day, held recently by Tavistock’s Neighbourhood Police Team, saw officers visit over 100 businesses, including retailers and licensed premises, to speak directly with owners and managers.

The focus was on discussing crime-related concerns, sharing crime prevention advice, and encouraging businesses to report incidents like shoplifting and anti-social behaviour more often.

Sergeant Tom Ottley, who leads the Tavistock Neighbourhood Police Team, described the event as a success.

He said: “The team visited 100 premises during the business action day which included licenced premises and retailers. We had some really positive engagement and it is positive that all parties are keen to be more effectively connected.

“This was a very useful opportunity to talk to retailers and listen to what they would like from us.”

A key part of the initiative is the introduction of the DISC system, which Tavistock BID has recently invested in.

This online tool allows businesses to easily report crimes, suspicious activities, and anti-social behaviour.

By using the system, businesses can also share information with each other, creating a stronger, more connected community.

In addition to the Safer Business Action day, Sergeant Ottley and his team also held a street briefing on January 9 in Bedford Square.

The event allowed local residents to speak face-to-face with officers about any issues they might have.

Sergeant Ottley encouraged the community to continue sharing information with the police to help improve safety.

“We know that the public can help us by sharing information they have. Officers can’t be everywhere and we get some great community intelligence passed on which helps us target our efforts in the right place and reassures the rest of the community that we are taking action,” he said.

Looking ahead, plans are also in place for a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) to be introduced in Tavistock.

The PSPO would place restrictions on things like public drinking and noise in certain areas. The local authority is set to review the order in March.

For residents who couldn’t attend the street briefing but still want to connect with the police, Tavistock’s public enquiry office will soon reopen, offering in-person contact with officers Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 3pm (excluding Sundays and Bank Holidays).

The police encourage anyone with information to reach out via the non-emergency number 101 or through the Devon & Cornwall Police website.
