HRH The Princess Royal
The Devon County Agricultural Association (DCAA) has announced the appointment of Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, as its President for 2025. The official announcement was made during the association’s annual meeting on January 31st, marking a significant moment for the organisation and its flagship event, the Devon County Show.
The Princess Royal, known for her deep-rooted commitment to agriculture, rural affairs, and equestrian pursuits, will serve as the figurehead of the DCAA throughout the year. Her appointment follows that of renowned Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines MBE DL, who held the presidency in 2024.
The Princess Royal, the only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and sister to His Majesty The King, has long been associated with British farming and equestrianism. A passionate advocate for rural communities, she manages her own farm and estate in Gloucestershire and has championed numerous agricultural causes over the years. Her equestrian achievements are equally notable; she made history as the first member of the Royal Family to compete in the Olympic Games, riding The Queen’s horse, Goodwill, in the 1976 Montreal Olympics’ three-day event.
His Majesty The King, a strong supporter of rural life, also shares a connection with the Devon County Agricultural Association, serving as its patron.
Supporting The Princess Royal during her tenure as President will be Deputy President Roger Ellis. A fourth-generation farmer from Dunchideock, Ellis took over his family’s farm at the age of 18 following his father’s passing. The Devon County Show has played a significant role in his life, providing support and community during the early challenges of managing the farm. His involvement with the show spans six decades, including his role as Chief Steward of the Horse section, an area of particular significance given The Princess Royal’s equestrian background.
Commenting on his appointment, Ellis said: “I am honoured to take up the Deputy Presidency and will greatly enjoy supporting The Princess Royal during her year as our President, particularly given our mutual passion for horses and rural life. 2025 also happens to be the year that my wife Mary and I celebrate our diamond wedding anniversary - 60 years of marriage, which is quite a milestone. It’s going to be quite a year all around.”
With The Princess Royal at the helm as President, 2025 promises to be a momentous year for the Devon County Agricultural Association, further strengthening its ties with the Royal Family and reinforcing its commitment to the farming and rural community.
The highly anticipated Devon County Show, a staple event celebrating agriculture, farming, and rural traditions, is scheduled to take place on May 15th, 16th, and 17th. The event attracts thousands of visitors each year, showcasing livestock, equestrian competitions, local produce, and agricultural advancements.
Tickets for the Devon County Show are now available at www.devoncountyshow.co.uk, offering attendees the opportunity to experience the rich heritage and vibrant future of Devon’s agricultural community.
