The MP for South West Devon has celebrated the ongoing construction of the new Dartmoor Building at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of local healthcare services.
Situated on the main Derriford site, directly opposite the multi-storey car park, Costa, and Boots Pharmacy, the Dartmoor Building is poised to become a key addition to the hospital.
The modern facility will house the new Urgent Treatment Centre and provide space for the relocation of several vital services from the main hospital, including the Fracture Clinic, Main Outpatients, and Pre-operative Assessments.
Set to be completed by the end of April 2025, the Dartmoor Building will open its Urgent Treatment Centre slightly ahead of schedule, by the end of March 2025.
This development is expected to enhance patient care and accessibility at the hospital, alleviating pressure on existing services.
Rebecca Smith MP, Member of Parliament for South West Devon, commented: “Derriford's new Emergency Care Unit, which I fought hard to secure, is a major win for Plymouth and the surrounding area. But the Dartmoor Building is equally crucial in increasing capacity at the back end of Derriford.
“The funding secured by the last Conservative Government will help ease pressure on our Emergency Department, allowing emergency medicine specialists to focus on patients who are critically ill.
“Despite delays in Westminster, we’re finally seeing progress on the ground. I will continue to push for further investment into our local NHS and will closely monitor the development.”
The Dartmoor Building, officially designated as the Urgent Treatment Centre, will be equipped to treat a wide range of minor injuries, including cuts, small burns or scalds, bites and stings, sprains, certain fractures, minor head injuries, infected wounds, and foreign bodies in the eyes.
