Five primary schools in Plymouth have been selected among the first in the country to benefit from the government’s landmark initiative providing free, daily breakfast clubs for all pupils.

Pennycross Primary, St Peter’s Primary, Widey Court Primary, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary, and Pilgrim Primary Academy will take part in the early adopter phase of the scheme, set to launch at the start of the summer term in April 2025.

The initiative is part of a nationwide rollout aimed at 750 schools in England’s most disadvantaged communities, ensuring every child starts the day with a nutritious meal. Research has consistently shown that school breakfast clubs improve attendance, behaviour, and educational attainment while also helping parents with childcare and reducing household costs.

Local MPs Fred Thomas (Plymouth Moor View) and Luke Pollard (Plymouth Sutton and Devonport) have welcomed the scheme, calling it a “game changer” that will significantly boost children’s health and education while easing financial pressure on families.

Luke Pollard MP said: "I am delighted that children here in Plymouth will benefit from the first phase of the government’s rollout of universal free breakfast clubs.

“Breakfast clubs will mean that every child starts the day ready to learn, fuelling hungry minds and boosting attainment, while helping parents with childcare and the cost of living.”

Fred Thomas MP added: "This is fantastic news for children and their families in Plymouth. During the general election, we promised to introduce free breakfast clubs for all primary school children, and we are delivering on that promise.

“This initiative will not only improve health and educational outcomes for children in our city, but it will also provide much-needed support for parents during the cost of living crisis. I can't wait to see these clubs start!"

The initiative has also been praised by Councillor Sally Cresswell, Plymouth City Council Cabinet Member for Education, Skills, and Apprenticeships, who highlighted its positive impact on children’s learning and wellbeing.

Cllr Cresswell said: "As both Cabinet Member and a former primary school teacher, I am delighted to see the free primary breakfast clubs taking shape with clear planning. I am particularly pleased that five Plymouth primaries have been accepted as early adopter schools.

“This is a practical policy that will support children to achieve and thrive. A nutritious breakfast, constructive activities, and positive interaction with others will ensure a calm and productive start to the day. This means children will be ready to learn, and teachers can confidently teach. Parents and carers can also feel reassured that their youngsters are happy and secure.”

The government’s free breakfast club initiative is one of several measures aimed at reducing the cost of living for families, alongside caps on branded school uniform costs and increased government-funded childcare.

With Plymouth leading the way as an early adopter, the scheme is set to have a lasting impact on children’s education and family wellbeing across the city.
