The Devon County Show has announced that acclaimed actor and animal advocate Martin Clunes will officially open this year’s Festival of Heavy Horses, one of the most popular attractions at the event.

Now in its third year, the Festival will begin at 10am on Thursday 15 May and promises to be the biggest yet.

Held in association with Whistlefish, it will showcase 19 heavy horses across a variety of breeds, including Shires, Clydesdales, Suffolks, Percherons and the imposing North American Belgians – the world’s tallest draught horse breed, with individuals reaching heights of 21 hands.

Across the three-day event, spectators will see these powerful animals demonstrate their historic working skills in the main arena, pulling drays and stud carts, and competing in in-hand and ridden classes.

Within the dedicated Heavy Horse Village, visitors can watch the horses being prepared in traditional ceremonial tack, with ornate brass fittings, leather harnesses, bells, plaited manes and bright ribbons.

Expert commentators will provide live insight into each display, exploring the historical importance of these horses and their role in shaping rural life.

Martin Clunes, widely recognised for his roles in Men Behaving Badly and Doc Martin, is a lifelong animal enthusiast and experienced horseman.

He owns a number of Clydesdales on his farm in Dorset and has narrated a range of wildlife documentaries.

“There is no one better for the job,” said Diana McFeat, organiser of the Festival.

“Everyone loves Martin Clunes, and we’re so grateful that he’s lending his support at the Festival, to help raise awareness for these gentle giants and ensure their survival as a cherished breed for generations to come.”

Clunes will also return to television screens this year alongside Neil Morrissey in Neil & Martin’s Bon Voyage, a three-part travelogue through southern France, marking nearly 30 years since the pair last appeared together on screen.
