A man has been jailed for 10 months after threatening two people with an axe during a disturbing incident at a pub in Okehampton.

Jason Semple, 54, of Tavistock Road, Okehampton, appeared at Exeter Crown Court on Monday, 13th May, where he was sentenced following a guilty plea to two counts of threatening a person with a bladed weapon in a public place.

The charges relate to an incident on Sunday 13 April at the White Hart Hotel on Fore Street, Okehampton.

At around 6pm, Semple entered the pub carrying an axe and made his way to the beer garden where he approached two men sitting at a table. The victims, who were known to Semple, were subjected to aggressive threats as he waved the axe in the air. One of the men picked up a chair in an attempt to shield himself.

A member of the public bravely intervened, and Semple fled the scene by climbing over the back fence.

Devon & Cornwall Police responded swiftly, deploying armed units, the police helicopter, dog teams, and local officers to conduct a search of the area. Semple was located and arrested shortly before 9pm.

He was taken into custody and later told officers during interview that he had no recollection of the incident or how he came to be in possession of the weapon.

Semple appeared in court on Tuesday 15 April and was remanded in custody ahead of today’s sentencing.

Sector Inspector Daniel Jones said:

“Semple acted brazenly and aggressively, targeting individuals he knew in a public setting where families and members of the community were enjoying a quiet Sunday evening. His actions understandably caused fear and alarm among those present and in the wider town.
“I welcome the sentence handed down today. I would also like to thank the courageous members of the public who intervened, and the local community for keeping us informed. Their support helped us bring this incident to a swift and safe conclusion.”
One resident took to Facebook to praise the actions of the staff in The White Hart, saying: “I would just like to say thank you to all the staff at JD Wetherspoon the White Hart Okehampton for their quick actions this evening locking us all in, as a group with children this made up feel quite safe when an incident happened. Credit where credit is due.”
